Throw this in your car stereo for a late night drive down a long road in the brush. The mood has been set for this, Mike Shannon’s third full-length artist album, Memory Tree. That is, if you’re scouring the hills for roots techno that’s soft, mellow and glitchy. This record should have a place in your collection for nights to relax by the figurative fireplace. Shannon makes his entrance unassumingly with the low crackling audio of “Beyond Incubation,” reminding us of the mood warm vinyl can set. The album carries on into cleaner and more defined sounds that resemble brilliantly shined metal. The third track, “Wolf Module,” continues down the urban road, creating a musical backdrop for a factory filled with underground mechanics and gears. “Dr X” brings in sounds cavernous and upbeat that would mix into any deep house set in a club that pays homage to the classics. Memory Tree is airy, luminescent, deep and rhythmic. It holds elements of many electronic styles — Detroit techno, ambient and house — bringing them all together in this warm place where a genre is merely a noun, and music never ceased to be real.

In what way could the music industry in Canada show more support for techno?
The industry in Canada can’t realistically support techno more than it already is. Techno has always been a relatively underground thing in Canada but recognized worldwide as a quality breeding ground for some great labels and acts. Plus 8 and Minus are technically Canadian labels, for example. There aren’t any other outlets to support techno in Canada that aren’t already being exploited. I mean, I guess editors at magazines like yours could give myself or other artists a cover once in a while [laughs]. And I guess the majors could take electronic music a little more seriously and sign something that doesn’t sound like it belongs in every other Molson Canadian commercial. Look at what the Dutch did with Tiesto. Maybe the Canadian majors can try the same thing with some good-looking kid from Winnipeg or Yellowknife.

What sparked the creation of Memory Tree?
The Memory Tree seed was planted when I was arriving in Berlin. I just set up a new studio and a lot of ideas started to flow. A lot of things personally were happening that inspired a lot of the tracks. It just made sense to compile things and work on a new album for 2008 but I didn’t know where or how it would exactly end up when I started working on it. I personally wanted to write a collection of tracks that broke some new ground for myself, shying away from the ultra-minimal and trying to write some more soulful techno.

And what was your experience finally releasing a record with Plus 8/Minus?
Working with Plus 8 was like a childhood dream of mine coming true. I always had a ton of respect for Rich, John and the artists involved with the label. Some of the first techno records I owned were on Plus 8 and to be a part of that as a Canadian was a milestone in my career. Running a label, my experience working with Rich and the Minus guys has been an interesting and inspiring. Just seeing how the whole machine works and how it’s possible to create a label like this that’s almost completely independent and compromise-free. Rich most definitely tries to follow through with things so that they work out exactly the way he had planned it. Of course, things are never perfect every time but they certainly plan them to be and go to great lengths to make sure it comes out looking that way. (Plus 8)

A few great things that went down in Calgary this month:

- The annual ladies-only Peanut Butter Classic charity golf classic raised $72,000 for the Youville Residence Society of Alberta and 44 lb. of peanut butter for the Food Bank, making these chicks with sticks the Charity Superwomen of September.

- Best Bash on our radar this month was a tie between the ridiculously sold-out DJ Tiesto concert at Flames Central and Amanda Hehr's 30th birthday party at La Vita e Bella.

- Notable new additions for the palates of the people in September included Rush Restaurant on 9 Ave. S.W. and Olives in Arriva. And lest we forforget our new neighbourhood favourite -- Little Lebanon Pita and Donair on 17 Ave. S.W.

- Most underrated party place of the month: The Marquee Room -- made all the more fab this month thanks to the Film Fest.

RENOVATION RUNDOWN

Unless you were living under an evening-news-hour rock last week, you likely heard about CTV's Operation Renovation initiative.

The annual event sees a local non-profit group benefit from a much-needed makeover, while all sorts of generous volunteers and local businesses roll their sleeves up to make it happen.

For the fourth year in a row, reno-experts Albi Renova and president Brian Mauer stepped up to bear the brunt of the designing, planning and interior finishing for the 2008 Operation Renovation charity of choice -- the Calgary Women's Emergency Shelter.

Home to as many as 40 women and children per night, the space has seen its fair share of wear and tear, and was in desperate need of an overall renovation.

After an entire week of CTV anchors, reporters, volunteers and personalities picking up a paint brush and pitching in their time, the front foyer, living room area, therapy room and kitchen were all revamped to be a place of light and hope.

Tiesto triumphs at DJ Awards

Tiesto, Richie Hawtin and David Guetta were among the winners at last night’s DJ Awards, which took place in Ibiza.

Tiesto won the international DJ award, Hawtin triumphed in the techno category and Guetta won the house award.

Special awards were presented to those who have dedicated their services to the music industry including Bill Kelly, co-founder of the Miami Music Conference, and Beatport founder Jonas Tempel.

The awards were hosted by Capital DJ Des Paul and included live performances from Ron Carroll and Fragma.

The genre bending Electrik Playground returns to the UK for the first event after a sell out season with Tiesto at the world’s biggest club, Privilege in Ibiza.

And that means that Riley and Durrant will be thrashing out a three hour set together with Carl Bryant and resident DJ Col Hamilton.

Few DJs and producers can claim as much diversity as Nick Riley and Andi Durrant. Their debut artist album “Research & Development” was released last summer, hitting the iTunes top 50 in the first month of sales, and receiving great critical acclaim for its unique genre-bending sound.

Tiësto announces residency at Privilege, Ibiza, for summer 2008

For the first time in three years Tiësto returns to the island of Ibiza to host his own weekly residency at Privilege.

Tiësto will be the resident every Monday, starting on the 7th of July until the closing party on the 22nd of September. Tiësto will deliver his four hour deejay sets in the style of his 'In Search of Sunrise' series, everything dedicated to the atmosphere that can only be found on the Balearic Islands.

To underline its reputation as biggest club in the world, Privilege has set up a Tiësto customized event for his residency; complete with a totally new and future tech production, a newly designed and customized deejay booth, a full state of the art LED back wall, and the latest new design when it comes to light and video. All this combined with the sound of Tiësto will create an atmosphere, incomparable to any of the club nights on Ibiza and it will without a doubt deliver the highest quality night this summer on the entire island.

After the success of his original Elements of Life album, Tiësto returns with a brand new remixed edition.

All eleven tracks of the original album are presented in a remixed version, where the song 'He's A Pirate' is now replaced with the previously unavailable 'No More Heroes', a track Tiësto especially recorded for the performances of the Blue Man Group during some of his Elements of Life World Tour concerts.

The board of the annual International Dance Music Awards at the famous Winter Music Conference in Miami announced that Tiësto won the IDMA award for Best Global DJ.
Tiësto, who won the title for the second time, also won the award in the category of Best Full Length DJ Mix CD with his successful mix compilation 'In Search Of Sunrise 6 – Ibiza'.

2008 is the 23rd year of The International Dance Music Awards and is part of the annual Winter Music Conference in Miami, which is considered the most important international business fair in the world of dance.

On the 11th of January, Tiësto will host the famous BBC dance program 'Dance Anthems' on Radio 1 from 23.00 – 01.00. The regular host of the show Dave Pearce, currently on vacation, has invited several DJs to host his program during his absence.

Dance4Life, the youth of today and Tiesto Together Raising Awareness on hiv and aids

HIV and AIDS form a major problem all over the globe. Dance4Life tries to do something about this, together with thousands of students and ambassadors like Tiësto.
Currently, almost 40 million people in the world are infected with HIV and 90% of them live in developing countries. Dance4Life actively involves youth all around the world in pushing back HIV and AIDS and fighting the stigma and taboos surrounding them. Youth can participate in Dance4Life through Dance4Life School Projects and Act4Life, which isn't about books, preaching or homework; it's about dance, music, drumming, videos, and the youth of today.

Tiësto is the ambassador of Dance 4 Life and recently he visited a few projects that Dance4Life currently runs in South Africa. He considers the concept of Dance 4 Life to be very effective: 'The way Dance4Life engages young people around the world to do something about the HIV/AIDS problem is very powerful. They offer young people an attractive way to do something themselves, and reward them with a spectacular event. The combination of serious content and entertainment assures that Dance4Life gets young people on the move.'

Tiesto Club Life Podcast Passes the download mark of 100000 Per Show

Tiësto's radio show Podcast, 'Tiësto's Club Life', passed the number of 100,000 downloads per show this weekend.
Hosted by Tiësto himself, the radio program 'Tiësto's Club Life', was first broadcast in April of this year. The show, which airs every Friday night as a two hour feature on Dutch national radio, is also available as an abridged one hour Podcast version every following Monday. Tiësto presents this Podcast for all international users in English.

Currently running in several countries like France, USA, Russia, Poland and Ukraine amongst others, the radio show features the latest and most exclusive tracks and delivers a platform for young talent with the weekly 'Fifteen Minutes of Fame': beginning DJs from all over the globe can send in their own 15 minute live set that might be chosen by Tiësto himself for broadcast during the program. Once a month, a full hour is dedicated to an exclusive part from one of Tiësto's live sets recorded during his Elements of Life World Tour.

The success of his Elements of Life World Tour 2007-2008 has inspired Tiësto to team up with Reebok again for the introduction of a unique new shoe that was especially designed for the Elements of Life tour.

The new Tiësto shoe is the latest in the RBK DJ-line and will be released as a limited edition of only a 1000 pairs. The shoes will be numbered (0001-1000) in reflective material and all sets will come with a white and red lace. After weeks of anticipation and heavy rotation on his own MySpace, Tiësto finally announces the official release of his remix of Justin Timberlake's 'Love Stoned'. The completely reworked version of Timberlake's current hit single first aired on Tiësto's own radio show and PodCast 'Tiësto's Club Life'.

Justin Timberlake's 'Love Stoned' (Tiësto Remix) will be available on iTunes from Tuesday, September 11th.

The track was originally written and produced by Justin, Timbaland and Nate Hills and features the unmistakable Timbaland sound. While the song skyrocketed up the charts, Tiësto was approached for a remix, and from that moment on, things went pretty swiftly. With the original out-takes in hand, he went into the studio and would not rest until the new mixdown and additional programming delivered a genuine 'Tiësto Remix'.

Tiësto is very clear about his thoughts on remixes and recently stated: 'I'm open to doing remixes. I went to Ibiza last June for inspiration after two years of absence and I have to say that the island is still very magical to me. There are so many beautiful, secret spots to discover and the parties at the clubs are still crazy and energetic. So to make sure that I would capture the love and dedication I feel for the island, I just had to go back for the proper inspiration. It's with modesty that I can tell you that now I know for sure that 'ISOS 6' earned it to be called 'Ibiza'!

I mixed the album a couple of weeks ago in the old-fashioned way, which means that I didn't use any programs or computerized gadgets for it. I worked with CD-players for the mix. Most of the tracks are so exclusive that, if I'd still be mixing with records, I wouldn't have been able to get those productions on vinyl!

A beautiful, happy Balearic guitar track.

9. Ohmna - The Sun'll Shine (Sunrise Mix)
Amazing track I received of one of the house godfathers Johan Groenewegen. This DJ/producer gives me only a couple of tracks a year but they are always special and he delivers high quality.

10. Moonbeam - See The Difference Inside (Inside Mix)
Very original vocals and production from Russia.

11. Allure featuring Julie Thompson - Somewhere Inside Of Me
A track we did with Julie Thompson. She does a live performance of the song in our Elements Of Life tour around the globe and it's going down very well!

12. Taxigirl - High Glow
A sparkling track with a beautiful vocal.

13. Reeves featuring Alanah - Lonely
Very warm and emotional production. I get goosebumps whenever I hear it.

14. Imogen Heap - Hide & Seek (Tiësto's In Search Of Sunrise Remix)
This song won't be released on any other CD ever. We made it especially for this volume of In Search Of Sunrise and it's a perfect track to end the first disc of the mix.

ISOS 6 – CD 02

1. Steve Forte Rio - A New Dawn
A special melody to open a set with, very original.

2. Nic Chagall - What You Need (NC's In Love With Prog Mix)
There are two great mixes of this track but this one is my favorite for the CD.
In a big room or arena I would play the harder mix.

3. Marc Marzenit - Trozitos De Navidad (Primavera Remix)
A typical Tiësto track with great string pads.

4. John Dahlbäck - Don't Speak
A special and mysterious track with a unique and moody sound.

5. Deadmau5 - Arguru
A producer and fresh talent from Canada, we will hear a lot from this guy in the following years.

6. First State featuring Anita Kelsey - Falling
Big tune on the dancefloor. House beats with trance, a perfect combination!

7. Jonas Steur featuring Jennifer Rene - Fall To Pieces
Very nice production of Jonas, it's a big hit at the moment.

8. JES - Imagination (Tiësto Remix)
My remix of one of my favorite singers. Fits perfectly on the album.

9. Tom Cloud - Mercury Room
I am getting a little more trancy and deeper at the end of this CD, starting with this track.

10. Marcus Schössow - Chase My Rabbit
Great track which has everything: it's energetic, melodic and original.

11. Maor Levi - Reflect
A warm track with great vocals. It's been around for a while but definitely worth it to be on ISOS 06.

12. Progression - Different Day, Different Light
The best track of their debut album.

13. Jedidja - Dancing Water
We made this track especially for the water piece in our Elements Of Life show. You can hear the old skool Tiësto trance sound in this track.

14. D'Alt Vila - Breathing
A perfect, beautiful melody to end the compilation with.

When I finally listened to the whole CD, both part one and two in one take, I felt I was in a different zone! I hope you'll feel the same and that you will enjoy this mix.

Tiesto Delivers Two Phenomenal Sold Out Shows to NYC

Last week, Hammerstein Ballroom was home to two of the best shows that NYC has experienced so far. Tiësto rocked the city, showcasing exactly why he has been lauded as the world's best and most widely known DJ again and again. Both nights were sold out, but that didn't stop the line of hopeful fans from queuing up early, hoping to come across a ticket or two.

This pair of Tiësto In Concert shows had stage production that could only be compared to a stadium rock concert. The evening was complete with fireworks and a tandem performance of the Blue Man Group, offering something for everyone. The music comprised in the solid five hour solo set was well programmed and seamlessly constructed, and included his latest remixes of Imogen Heap, Snow Patrol and Jose Gonzales. On Tuesday night, June 12th, the students of the Dalton College in The Hague experienced the surprise of a lifetime. The students were in the middle of a big school party, when out of the blue one of their superiors announced that the one and only Tiësto, the ambassador of Dance4Life himself, had arrived.
For a second, the Dalton College was too small for the loud cheers of joy and happiness when the DJ showed up behind the decks on stage. A full hour long Tiësto played a massive set and gave the students a sparkling kick-off for the rest of the night, since by now their school party was in full swing.

The Dalton College was one of the first Dutch schools to participate in the Dance4Life school project, in which the students do activities to raise money for Dance4Life.

On Wednesday, the 7th of June, Tiësto opened his new club-restaurant in the heart of Amsterdam. All the known Dutch media were there to witness the moment when Tiësto officially kicked-off by playing his specially composed new 'Cineac Anthem' called 'Happy People'.

The name of the new place is Cineac and represents the ultimate combination of Chinese high cuisine, dance music and live-entertainment. The name still refers to its previous status of a cinema theatre.

Tiësto's performance at the Ethias Arena, last Saturday the 19th of May, rocked the city of Hasselt, Belgium. More than 18,000 fans including the complete Belgian media and press witnessed the biggest Elements of Life show set-up so far, full of spectacular special effects, during this Belgian part of the Elements of Life tour.

With the tour, that not only takes Tiësto through Europe but all over the world as well, 35 crew members and three trailers with state of the art equipment deliver a tremendous event. During the Hasselt show, two midi-driven water shows were deployed for the first time, running in full sync with the live set of the DJ in combination with a 60 by 15 meter HD screen, which resulted in an impressive light show.

Tiësto's sparkling live set had a few highly entertaining exchanges with live performances from artists like Jes, Julie Thompson, BT and of course Christian Burns, who entertained the audience with the hit 'In The Dark'.

One of the highlights of the evening was the unique collaboration with The Blue Man Group, the world famous blue headed trio, that recently recorded a brand new track with Tiësto called 'No More Heroes'.

Henüz Türkçe öğrenemedim ama bir iki kelime biliyorum. Şimdiye kadar dünyanın bir çok ülkesinde konserler verdiğim için her gittiğim yerden ancak bir iki kelime öğrenebiliyorum. O kelimeleri de unutuyorum hatta bazen ana
dilimi bile unutuyorum. Gerçi Türkçe konuşmak da çok iyi olurdu.

- Türkiye’ye geldiğinizde en çok ne yapmayı seviyorsunuz?

Türkiye ziyaretlerimde genelde konser takvimime göre hareket ediyorum. Eğer yoğun bir program varsa konsere kadar uyuyup dinleniyorum. Eğer boş vaktim varsa, alışverişe gidip gerçek bir Türk masajı yaptırıyorum. Bu arada lezzetli Türk yemeklerinden yemeyi de ihmal etmiyorum.

- Türkiye’yi üç kelime ile ifade etseniz?

Güzel, coşku dolu ve eşsiz.

- Her hangi bir çalışmanızda Türk müziğinden etkilendiniz mi?

Konserlerim için çok fazla ülkeyi gezdiğimden farklı kültürleri görme şansım oluyor. Bu farklı kültürlere sahip insanlar bana kendi ülkelerinin müziklerini dinletiyorlar ki bu gerçekten etkileyici. Kendi müziğime her zaman dünya çapında öğeler eklemeye çalışıyorum. Bunun en güzel örneği şu sıralar Tarkan’ın “Pare Pare” adlı şarkısına bir remix çalışması yapıyorum. Yakında piyasada olacak özel bir çalışma.

- Dünyaca ünlü bir DJ olarak bu durumdan sıkıldığınız oluyor mu?

Asla. Hiç bir zaman içinde bulunduğum duruma alışmadığım için sıkılmıyorum. Ben rüyalarımı yaşıyorum bu yüzden pek şikayetçi olduğumu göremezsiniz.

- Kendinizi en güvende hissettiğiniz yer neresi?

Sanırım herkes gibi ben de en çok evde güvenli ve rahat hissediyorum. Benim için Hollanda’da ailemin ve arkadaşlarımın yanında olmak gibisi yok.

- Sporla aranız nasıl? Tuttuğunuz bir takım var mı?

Farklı spor türlerini seviyorum. Bir de sürekli yollarda olduğum için spor yapacak çok fazla vaktim olmuyor. Fitness yapıyor ve ara sıra kaldığım otellerde tenis oynuyorum. Özel olarak tuttuğum bir takım yok ama her zaman iyi olanın kazanmasını isterim. Bu arada Euro 2008’i izlemeyen yoktur herhalde. Hollanda için üzücü de olsa Türkiye bir hayli süpriz yaptı bu sene. Devam etmesini çok isterdik ama yine de Türk milli Takımının geldiği nokta büyük bir başarı.

Tiësto's North American EOL tour will have a New York kick-off

On Thursday the 19th of July Tiësto will kick-off his North American tour at the Hammerstein Ballroom, New York, with two gigs in succession. To show his appreciation to the Big Apple and its citizens, Tiësto will also appear at an in-store signing session.

The two New York gigs will present the Elements of Life shows with stunning laser effects, fireworks, and a an enormous HD screen. During the event there will also be exclusive performances from the Blue Man Group.

On Wednesday, July 18th, Tiësto will do a special in-store DJ set and album signing at Virgin Records in Union Square at 8 PM. He will be on site to sign copies of his critically acclaimed and chart-topping third artist album, 'Elements of Life'.

Dear fans, I am very sorry for what happened at the Marina Club in Bahrain last Wednesday. Allow me to explain to you what really took place.

The promoter disappeared after 1 a.m. with the DJ fee and the money everybody had paid for their tickets.

I still wanted to play at the party, so I was waiting for somebody to pick me up from the hotel and bring me to the venue. At 2 a.m., still nobody had arrived and we heard that police was already on the way to the venue. At that moment, I had no other choice than to stay in my hotel room.

The promoter tried to escape Bahrain, but luckily he got caught near the Saudi Arabian border. He is in jail at this moment.

Again, I am very sorry for what happened and I will definitely try to find a way to make it up with all my fans who bought tickets for the show.

I just finished my little holiday in Ibiza between the gigs. I love this island! I've been coming here for years and it's never boring. I was a bit disappointed that they closed Amnesia and a few other clubs but everybody was very positive that they will be open soon again.

I am really happy with the way things are going now on the 'Elements Of Life' World Tour. In the beginning of this year I felt a lot of pressure because it's not easy to roll out a tour like this worldwide. My whole team was under pressure and the first couple of shows we had to get used to each other because it was new for everybody. And a last minute cancellation of shows doesn't help either! But now, after a couple of months on the road I can say I am really proud of everyone who works with me on this tour:

Jes is doing a great performance every time again and again. This girl has so much energy, she is amazing! I am working on a new song with her at this moment. Julie Thompson is a great performer as well. I love her voice and she sings two songs on the show now. We finished a new song called 'Somewhere Inside' and it's going down well. I will probably put it on my next mix compilation. Christian Burns is also doing an excellent job!! When you close your eyes while he sings, you hardly hear the difference between the track on my album and his live performance.

Apologies: I was unable to blog about Saturday at Bonnaroo because of Saturday at Bonnaroo. It's Sunday afternoon now, and with the festival still buzzing and thumping all around us (am currently at our tent in the Sonic Village, with a band called Harrybu McCage doing their thing on the stage next door) I'm just now getting around to processing everything from the past thirty-something hours.
Bonnaroo had My Morning Jacket's 1 AM set listed as Friday, but it happened well after midnight so I'm counting it as the first show I saw Saturday. In the pitch-black night, with two huge floating orb-balloons suspended in air on either side of the Which Stage, the band came on in between rain showers, which picked up right along with the set. We're all convinced Jim James has personal control of the weather, which was a more moving effect than the flowy red scarf he kept swinging around when not tied to his guitar. The rain, at least, kept their cover of Sly & the Family Stone's "Hot Fun in the Summertime" from being a too-obvious celebration of the upcoming steamy festival season.

A few songs in, I followed Multimedia Intern Ashley-- who's been doing all our camerawork this weekend, and is so patient with us even though sometimes we forget to point our mics at the people we're interviewing-- over to This Tent to see the guy someone had told us was the greatest DJ in the world, DJ Tiesto. Whether or not that's an accurate superlative, I don't know-- the whole time I kinda felt like I was at Ru San's, a local sushi place in Atlanta where pulsing dance tracks are a permanent accompaniment to the lunch buffet. The highlights were Cary Brothers, Jose Gonzalez and Tegan & Sara each taking the stage at different points to perform live the DJ Tiesto remixes of their songs, which is a completely baffling idea to me that I imagine must involve the artists practicing singing remixed versions of themselves which was probably weird to do, but if the maybe-possibly-greatest DJ in the world beckons, I guess you oblige.

By the time we got back to My Morning Jacket, Jim James had turned into Jim James Brown. He was writhing around on the stage, lurching and howling, with a cape on and everything. Then there was a cape and a straw hat. Then just a straw hat. Then more rain. Then we played the Lame Card and high-tailed it through the mud to the hotel.

A few hours later, Sharon Jones & the Dap Kings were the first act I saw on Saturday proper. The Kings must have been sweltering in their dapper wool suits, but they put on a great show with Sharon Jones as the sassy, soul-shuffling anchor. "I wore this dress so I could shake it!" she proclaimed after the first song, and shake she did. I grabbed a kebab and returned to the Which Stage for Gogol Bordello, the band of gypsy punks led by Eugene Hutz, whose wild flowing hair and handlebar mustache gave the look of a deranged Yanni, stripped down to cut-off marching band pants by the third song.

Later caught the Avett Brothers at the Other Tent. Didn't see them actually, thanks to awkward scaffolding-and-green-velvet-drape configuration, but they sounded great and I'm really liking the addition of yet another maniacal string-instrument player, Joe Kwon on cello. Skipped Ben Folds-- I'll love him forever but his live show hasn't changed in years-- but sang along to the bleed-over of his set as I booked it over to the Solar Stage for the Everybodyfields.

I feel like I've mentioned so many times in Paste blogs that it's becoming awkwardly conspicuous, but honestly, this is one of my favorite bands right now, maybe ever, so I get to talk about their first-ever Bonnaroo set. And also their second-ever, a few hours later. The first was besot from the left by Zappa Plays Zappa, the right by Mr. Folds, and above by a randomly circling helicopter, the sound on the stage wasn't great but the band sallied forth to a growing crowd, closing with Neil Young's "Helpless" which almost made me cry because I am a big baby. The second one was tucked into the quiet-by-comparison Troo Music Lounge, which was comparatively packed, seemingly with a lot of fans given the yelled-out song requests and hometown shouts of "Johnson City!" A few new songs were sprinkled in among others from the nearly year-old Nothing Is Okay and their earlier albums, and though they skipped "T.V.A.," my favorite, Jill and Sam made up for it by joining Ashley and myself on a strange little romp through the Bonnaroo grounds that will be available for your multimedia consuming selves sometime soon.

Beginning with Sigur Ros at That Tent, the rest of the evening is a hazy blur-- not due to any chemical alteration on my part, just sheer fatigue. After listening to Pearl Jam's set on the other side of the boneyard, we battled the mud for a few songs with Iceland's finest, then headed over to the What Stage for Kanye West as Ghostland Observatory rocked away at This Tent. And kept rocking. And kept rocking. As we staked out a spot on the lawn, waited, waited, and kept waiting. The original start time of 2:45 AM passed, then the new start time of 3 AM, then 3:15, then 3:30. When he was fifteen minutes late, folks started leaving in droves, and by the time we gave up nearly an hour after he was scheduled to go on, the crowd was livid-- a chorus of "Fuck you..!" "Kanye!" "Fuck you..!" "Kanye!" was rolling up from the back. Pretty much the only folks who were okay with the delay was the crowd in front of us with the balloons and the tank of nitrous oxide. No telling if the tank lasted them til 4:30 AM, when we hear Mr. West finally took the stage. We hear, too, that it wasn't a bad set-- just that, as the set edged towards 6 AM, the light show was a little hard to see thanks to, uh, you know, the sunrise. Can't confirm that, though, as we passed out at the hotel a mile away as the first basslines thumped across the interstate.

Today's the first bakingly hot day of the festival so I've just sought out one band: Tennessee Schmaltz. Billed as a bluegrass klezmer band, I ducked into the Troo Music Lounge to check them out but was a little disappointed. Guess it had to happen sometime.

PS, Happy Father's Day to my dad, who may or may not be reading this, but who should be fully ashamed of me for missing Levon Helm's set yesterday because, according to everyone who was there, it was absolutely phenomenal.

ETD, Pop: DJ Tiesto Kills the lights at the Palace

Electro Techno Disco Pop, one of the biggest techno events the Bay Area has to offer, has come and gone once again. My friends and I arrived a solid hour and half early, and were astounded by the amount of available parking. Though this is to be expected, as the Cow Palace can hold fifteen thousand raving fans.

Within the Cow Palace fans raved before a massive front stage area for the trance DJs, beneath a huge projector screen which played visuals above. There were four other dance stages set up with House, Breaks, Drum and Bass, and Hardcore themes.

As the palace started to fill up, it really came to life. Up in the front, I began to feel trapped within the crowd of ravers. The lights and the audience’s dancing glow sticks filled the dark room with energy. The air became thick with smoke from those who smuggled in cigarettes and marijuana.

The DJ lineup for the event was ridiculous—DJ Tiesto, Ferry Corsten, Markus Schulz, Deep Voices and twenty others. DJ Tiesto has to be the single most influential DJ of our time. Having traveled all over Europe, he has played almost everywhere you can think of, including the Turin Olympics.

It was incredible to see a live DJ who was so passionate about the music, constantly remixing it live for the fans.

I was pleasantly surprised with Marcus Schultz’s performance. I had never heard any of his music and I was very impressed. One friend I went with thought the visuals on the big screen weren’t very good. Though I honestly don’t think that’s a fair way to judge a DJ. It should be all about the music.

After a while, I decided to check out the shops. I was crazy thirsty and got a large soda, but it cost me $4.75—pretty much the most expensive drink I’ve ever bought in my life—because prices were inflated for the event.

Halfway through DJ Tiesto’s set of music, the power blew out. At first, people thought it was just a pause in the music and that it would build up again in a moment, but when it didn’t, the fans got angry. Technicians came out with flashlights trying to fix it, but unfortunately the power was out for good. So, the rave was over an hour early, but overall the fans were happy with the performance.

Rarities, B-Sides, and Other Stuff Volume 2 - Sarah MccLachlan

Haunting ramblings from the Canadian singer.

Compilations can really highlight some of the different approaches artists take when trying to capitalise on an extensive catalogue.

Sarah McLachlan's Rarities, B-sides and Other Stuff Volume 2 is exactly that, a collection of live tracks and rare material including covers and (as with Volume 1) songs she has done for films.

The songs range from a reworking of the prayer of St Francis to a duet with Emmylou Harris on Angel.

Her reworking of Joni Mitchell's River is beautiful, but now pales in comparison to what Herbie Hancock did with Corinne Bailey Rae on River: The Joni Letters .

The DJ Tiësto remix of Silence is completely unnecessary. McLachlan did the guest tracks on the song for Delerium and Michael Woods' remix is a chillout standard. DJ Tiësto has simply turned Delerium's version into a doef-doef nightmare.

Other than that little faux pas, which isn't really her fault, the songs are an excellent showcase for her haunting lyricism.

Fans will grab this offering with both hands and non-fans will be converted.

DJ Tiesto treats Boston fans to rare, intimate club shows

By many accounts, the dance music known as trance has been dead since the mid-1990s.

But somebody apparently forgot to tell Tiesto and the tens of thousands of fans who fill stadiums and clubs to hear him spin.

“It’s just the writers of a lot of magazines are trying to be cool,” Tiesto said of the trance deniers. “Actually, I’ve never been bigger than I am now in the U.S. I think it’s growing.”

Call him cocky, but he’s no fabricator. Tiesto recently finished three sold-out nights at Los Angeles hot spot Vanguard. He also is playing a weekly residency this summer at the world’s biggest nightclub, the 10,000-capacity Privilege on the Spanish island of Ibiza.

Now the 39-year-old phenom from the Netherlands (real name: Tijs Verwest) comes to Boston to bring his international dance flair to the Estate Wednesday and Thursday.

Speaking from his room at Hollywood’s celebrity-filled Chateau Marmont, Tiesto credits the Internet for fans’ fervor for his hypnotic, emotionally charged party music.

“It’s more accessible now than it was five or six years ago,” he said. “I’m playing here at Vanguard in L.A. three nights in a row. Four years ago, I couldn’t do one night. Thanks to the Internet, people are more connected to the music. They are finally able to listen to it and find out where DJs play.”

Not that he needed much more exposure. He’s been named the world’s top DJ by various magazines, nominated for a Grammy for his 2007 disc “Elements of Life,” and was the first DJ to play at an Olympics opening ceremony (in Athens in 2004). He even has a Reebok sneaker named after him.

There’s more: he scored a song on the “Pirates of the Carribean: Dead Man’s Chest” soundtrack, was honored by the Dutch royal family and awarded a Golden Harp, Holland’s highest musical honor. And how’s this for party-animal cred: Tiesto set a Guinness World Record by drinking 31 cans of Red Bull in 24 hours, a testament to the disc jockey’s crazed energy, which he frequently taps into during marathon sets that can last up to 14 hours.

“It’s just a great feeling when you go out onstage and there’s two- or three-thousand people,” he said. “They’re happy to see you, and they start jumping and screaming.”

In Europe, Tiesto regularly fills stadiums and arenas. He also regularly plays at large festivals worldwide, making his Boston club dates a gift to fans.

“I did stadiums for the past two years,” Tiesto said. “I figured a lot of fans would like to see me back in the clubs, especially old-school, die-hard fans. They’d like something more intimate. Make it more a very simple DJ set, instead of all the craziness around it.”

Playing smaller venues also reminds the Dutchman of his roots.

“I’m just very happy where I am at the moment,” he said. “I don’t realize I’m staying at the Chateau Marmont or selling out shows. I never think about how big I am. I just want to keep going and be happy and do my best to keep everything together.”

Tiesto is getting intimate. After rockin’ it in front of a record-breaking crowd (for a solo DJ) of over 15,000 at the Los Angeles Sports Arena last August as part of the mega-production “Elements of Life” tour, the Grammy-nominated Dutch DJ is toning it down a bit. Tiesto's going back to basics for his three-night residency at Hollywood club Vanguard, which is part of a 35-date club tour to promote his new mix CD, “In Search of Sunrise 7.”

Though the show will be pared-down by Tiesto’s blockbuster standards, with promoters Giant and Insomniac augmenting the venue’s already solid sound and lighting systems, Tiesto’s uplifting trance-Europe aesthetic will likely keep spirits higher than an old-school raver's hands long after the last 12-inch has been spun.

How does “In Search of Sunrise 7” differ from its predecessors?
It's not that much different. The main difference is on the second CD. The first CD is a little bit harder than No. 6, but the second CD is very trancey, like an old-school trance CD—very melodic, uplifting sounds, so it's actually a bit of back to the roots.

And this one has a little Asian influence?
I noticed that in Asia the trance sound is still really popular. When I play there, they react the most to the trance records off the second disc.

You’re coming to America to support the release of the album. This is going to be a very different tour from your previous full-production extravaganza. Why is that?
The Sports Arena is really nice to do, and it's great for film. If I want to do it again, I want to come up with something even more spectacular, even more over-the-top.

How do you top that last mega-tour?
That's what I'm working on at the moment. In the meanwhile, to get some inspiration and to play for fun, I'm going to play smaller club gigs. That's the reason why I chose to play the smaller venues like Vanguard, and that's why I'm going to play no hits at all, just very nice experimental Tiesto tracks. Not the big hits, but more a real DJ-mix, club-vibe show.

So this is going to be the equivalent of a David Bowie show post-“Sound + Vision”—a no-hits tour for the true faithful.
You could say that.

Do you miss playing in more intimate environments?
I do. There's no pressure, you just do your thing.

So how does Tiesto get intimate?
It will always be intimate. It doesn't matter if I play hard or soft. Intimate will be close to the crowd, very music-driven. I think L.A. will be a little bit more trancey, and other places will be more housey, like New York. It all depends on where I am and how the crowd reacts on the first couple of records; that's always how I decide where I go.

So how do you judge a crowd?
It's more of a feeling. You feel the room. I don't know how I feel it, but I just feel it. When the room is ready, and they wanna have a good time, I just know.

That was like a ten years in the blogosphere. But in my world, it was just a really long time ago. I'd like to say that I was on vacation, sunning myself in Hawaii or some other tropical locale, but no, that's not the case...

Instead, there was a semi-happy ending to a family emergency, an official radio interview, a launch party at Studio Boum and My Savvy Space, the very fashionable but worth it "Product Runway" fashion show, the "Hard A" luge (of which I did not experience) at the Yelp party, Pole Dancing and debauchery at the Girl Power Hour Red Party (please refer to page 57 in the June issue of DList Magazine), some kick-ass music by Lisa Shaw & Miguel Migs and a full band of disco househeads at Chop Suey, the viewing of Sex and the City twice in less then 15 hours, DJ Tiesto and the Crave Sample Sale all in the same weekend, A Veuve Cliquot Rose launch party at the W where I met the illustrious JJ McKay, Nick Verrios looking suave and so-not-Seattle (but better) at Twist while promoting the unsavory and almost gag-worthy Basil Hayden liquor (for a good cause), a Summer Kick-off Social in the sky that actually included glimpses of that strange and illustrious shining orb-thing that resembles the sun, a special edition of SAM:remix at the OSP, a smaller than last year but much more cosy and exciting Chinese Information Service Center gala, the acceptance and start of a full time job and a very lengthy and exhausting "adjustment period," the beginning of life as I know it with my best friend "Blackberry" - otherwise known as "the manufactured extension of my right hand," and finally....the end of a silly feud at the Times.

Boring, I know. So I won't go into detail, apologize or justify. Just know that I wasn't ignoring you in vain or on purpose....I just needed a break.

If you love clubbing and great music then perhaps it is time that you gave DJing a try. Many of the basic mixing skills can be picked up in a few months and although it takes years to fully master the medium it is something that everyone with a passion for music should try. The most important thing after all if picking tunes that really gets people going. You can then work on how to build a set and work hard on the techniques involved in making the transition between tracks seamless.

Nowadays the range of DJ equipment that is accessible to beginners has never been better. Technology has caught up with the music industry and there are now new and exciting ways on which to share music. DJs can now keep their music in MP3 format and even mix the songs using artificial mixing equipment that emulates the traditional record player setup. It also means that many aspiring DJs can make a name for themselves on the internet by sharing their efforts to friends via the internet. This can result in some DJs forming a massive fan base before they have even played live.

It has as a result never been more popular and with thousands of DJs becoming household names there are a few DJs that are achieving superstardom. Here are my favourites that would fall in this category.

Armin Van Buuren

The Dutch DJ Armin Van Buuren has become one of the leading Trance DJs in the world and he regularly gains enormous crowds for his club performances. Like most DJs he started very young and was fanatical about music. He used to spend all of his pocket money on music and would create tapes for his friends and family to listen to which included his favourite tracks of the moment.

His uncle introduced him to a computer program and he was then able to cut, mix and create his own music tunes from songs that he had collated. Alongside following his passion for music he took a degree in law but was able to follow his passion as he gained an enormous fan base and began to earn some money. He now has a weekly slot in one of the most prestigious of clubs in the club island of Ibiza. Here he has residence in Amnesia.

DJ Tiesto

Probably the most notorious of all the DJs in the world Tiesto has turned his passion for music into a multi-million dollar machine. The first DJ to ever sell out a stadium of 25000 people two nights in a row he has achieved a whole host of landmarks for DJs. He has set the benchmark for DJs at unprecedented heights by DJing for enormous events such as the Athens Olympics opening ceremony. He has even managed to break into the US commercial market where his delirium song was the first ever dance tune to hit the American daytime radio stations.

He has continued to change and modify the sounds that he plays and unlike some DJs is continuously trying new things. Perhaps this is why he has achieved such longevity in the industry. He has even been nominated for a Grammy and is highly regarded throughout the world. He regularly appears on the top ten list of DJs for the mixmag magazine.

World famous dance music star Tiesto is to play at Planetlove's first ever weekend event on the banks of Lough Neagh this September.

To mark the massive dance event's 10th birthday, the organisers of Planetlove decided to extend the party to festival status with a star-studded line-up and camping.

Thousands of dance music fans are expected to descend upon Shane's Castle in Co Antrim for the two-day event on Friday, September 5 and Saturday, September 6.

Dutch DJ Tiesto — a world leader in trance and electronic music — will bring his In Search of Sunrise Tour to Shane's Castle on September 5. The last time he appeareód in Northern Ireland in March 2007 for a King's Hall show, tickets sold out within a fortnight of going on sale. His concert shows have seen him transformed from famous DJ to international superstar.

The line-up for September 6 will be unveiled on Plantlove's official website on June 6 at www.planetlovemusic.com . Radio One will once again broadcast the event.

DJs’ ride up peaks in Vegas

Partyers packed Jet and The Bank, intoxicated not only by high-priced drinks and the frenzied nightclub atmosphere but also by loud, pounding music created by DJ Tiesto.

Tiesto, an international superstar from the Netherlands, flew into Las Vegas to perform for the Memorial Day weekend.

He’s one of the new breed of entertainers who have become a dominant force in Las Vegas in the past decade. They may not get the headlines of Cirque du Soliel, Cher or Barry Manilow, but week in and week out, DJs pack dozens of nightclubs with thousands of young revelers who add millions of dollars to the local economy.

Tiesto, named the world’s No. 1 DJ three years in a row by DJ Magazine, was brought in by Light Management Group, which runs six Vegas clubs.

Industry leaders such as Light and Pure Management tap into young people’s interest in dance music that rocks their souls and makes their party memorable.

“The DJ creates the energy and the vibe of the crowd,” says Light spokesman Alex Acuna. “These DJs create an energy the crowds remember.”

As a result many DJs, especially headliners such as Tiesto, gain fame and fortune their predecessors never dreamed possible.

DJ-ing has come a long way since the ’50s, when high schools hired popular radio announcers to come to the gymnasium on a Friday night and spin vinyl records by Little Anthony, Chuck Berry and Fats Domino while teens danced the bop, the stroll and the swing (East Coast and West Coast).

DJs graduated from sock hops to discotheques in the ’70s and kicked it up a notch. Bigger, louder speakers made the lighted floors tremble and energized the young crowds that spent the night dancing beneath the glimmering silver ball. Rock gave way to the disco beat of the Bee Gees, Donna Summer and Barry White.

And DJs became celebrities — although their fame rarely extended beyond the limits of the city where they played.

But today’s top club DJs sign million-dollar contracts, endorse products, produce records and travel around the world to get the party started from Dubai to Dallas.

“Touring club DJs, that’s probably been happening since 2000,” says David Berrie, who spins under the professional name DJ Berrie.

Talking by telephone from Mexico, he sounds a little tired, maybe because he has just flown from a gig in London to perform at a hot spot in Acapulco.

“I’ve been in six different countries in two weeks,” Berrie says. “It’s amazing, experiencing all these cultures.”

From Acapulco, he’s coming to Vegas, where he’s one of the regular DJs at the Tao nightclub in the Venetian. If you don’t find him at Tao, he may be at the Marquee in New York City or playing a party in Chicago or Washington, D.C.

Corporate affairs. Private parties. Nightclubs. DJs today jet around the world and stay at the finest hotels in the most luxurious resorts.

“Basically, the DJ game is totally different now,” says Berrie, 22. “We’re traveling all over.”

He studied piano, violin and drums but was fascinated by DJs. When he was a teen he spent hours practicing his disc-spinning techniques in his basement. At 16 he began doing parties for friends and dances at high schools, working for free until he became a hot item in the New York area.

He enrolled as a business major at Boston University but was working in three nightclubs. He dropped out of school to see how far he could go as a DJ.

Today, work looks for him. He has a management team to handle all the calls.

“If you have the reputation, the venues are calling you,” Berrie says. “A DJ might make $600 a night in New York. But I know DJs who get booked for $20,000 for a job that lasts three hours. And the international scene is even more ridiculous. To play in a huge stadium you might get 60 grand. Million-dollar contracts are being handed out routinely.”

The big bucks are worth it to the venues.

“It’s an investment for the club,” he says. “A well-known DJ can play a club in St. Louis and on opening night bring in so many people because of the name on the flier, it legitimizes the club.”

Not everyone can make the big bucks, or even the little ones.

“So many things go into making a good DJ,” Berrie says. “Music selection. Technical skills. Looks. All those things and more factor into why any particular DJ is popular. And everyone has their own preference in DJs.”

Mostly, it boils down to style.

“Every DJ has their own niche,” Berrie says. “There are millions of DJs out there. All have different ways of spinning. It’s tough, standing there and making the party jump. My style is fast-paced, hip-hop infused with house music.”

Berrie says he reads the crowd and adapts his style.

“Your ability to read the crowd is what it comes down to,” he says.

Charlie Anzalone was reading crowds before Berrie was born.

In the early ’70s, he was “Captain Disco,” a club DJ in his native Buffalo, N.Y.

“Wednesday night was oldies, the hottest night in town,” Anzalone says. “Everybody went there. Beer for a buck, DJs playing ’50s and ’60s music. It had one turntable, no mixer, just put a record on the turntable.”

In the days before “Saturday Night Fever,” club DJs were experimenting and laying the foundation for what followed.

“Everyone had to find their own niche, learn how to motivate the crowd,” Anzalone says, echoing what Berrie says of today’s DJs. “That was when DJs learned how to blend the music so people wouldn’t stop dancing between songs.

“That was when DJs started coming into prominence, taking people to places they hadn’t been yet. That’s when they started making money for the clubs.”

Those clubs weren’t charging a cover but were making money selling booze. The DJs’ goal was to get the crowd dancing and working up a thirst.

DJs played just in the city where they lived, but they became local celebrities.

“We walked into a club and everybody knew who we were,” Anzalone says. “We created a vibe for the nightclubs, just like DJs today. The only difference is now some of the DJs are making astronomical money — and the nightclubs that retain these DJs are taking in astronomical dollars.

“Back in the ’70s you could make $50, $60 a night, but a new car was only $3,500, so we were doing all right. We could make $300, $400 a week cash, plus drinks, and you got to meet a lot of chicks. What else would a 25-year-old guy want to do for a living?”

If he were just starting out DJ-ing now, he says, he would be driving a Bentley instead of a Hyundai.

Anzalone, 55, lives in Las Vegas and works as a ground-service agent at McCarran International Airport. He still takes an occasional DJ gig in New York, hangs out at Vegas nightclubs and knows many of the local DJs. He used to join Eddie McDonald, the resident DJ for Light at the Bellagio and Jet at the Mirage, on Monday nights at the Foundation Room at Mandalay Bay.

“They get a kick out of me,” Anzalone says. “I’m like the Godfather.”

Today’s top DJs spin in a different world. They have managers and booking agents. They remix songs and produce their own tracks and hit dance CDs. They are tech-savvy.

“They have a computer program now that they load into their laptop computer and it is interfaced with the mixing board,” Anzalone says. “They carry all of their records on the program in the laptop. It’s a lot easier to bring a laptop than hundreds of records.

“But if they had to do it live, without the computer, it wouldn’t sound so incredible.”

When he has a gig, he prefers vinyl on a turntable.

When Anzalone moved to Vegas in 1996, there wasn’t much of a club scene. Drink, a club at Harmon and Koval avenues, was the hot spot. It was the only place in town that catered to the younger crowds.

“The hotels’ marketing people and entertainment people were like 50, 60 years old. They didn’t understand the young people,” Anzalone says. But they understood that young adults were leaving the casinos for the club. So they hired young people to start nightclubs in the casinos.

The nightclub scene exploded and DJs provided the dynamite.

“Las Vegas became a destination for the young and hip, 21 to 35, with disposable income,” Anzalone says. “And DJs have become the stars of the Strip.”

Cyprus' DJ Gee Papa Sets a Date with Guiness World Records

Last summer DJ Gee Papa aka George Papapetrou from Nicosia DJ'd for an astounding 105 hours in an attempt to take the crown for the world's Longest Club DJ Marathon. However, his superhuman effort wasn't officially verified by 'the ultimate authority on record-breaking achievement' - Guinness World Records. He was devastated. But, where most people might have given up on the idea, Gee refined his mission for 2008, obtaining sponsorship, media support and, most importantly, booking an official from Guinness World Records to oversee the gig!

So the dates are now set - from Tuesday 1st to Sunday 6th June - for a six-day-long DJ-athon at Dot Club in Nicosia. With ANT1 TV and ANT FM as media sponsors, the epic event will be run in collaboration with Nicosia Municipal Council and the Greek Embassy in Cyprus. And, through cooperation with the Greek Ambassador and Greek Embassy in Cyprus, part of the net income from the event will be donated to victims of last year's fire disaster in Greece.
A professional DJ since 1990, Gee studied psychology prior to playing clubs alongside the likes of Tiësto, Sasha, Deep Dish and James Zabiela. He has also worked as a radio producer and DJ tutor, hosting local classes for over 30 students. To prepare for this Herculean task though, Gee's been running for two to three hours a day, avoiding using the toilet (although under regulations he's allowed a five-minute toilet break every hour) and not eating or sleeping much either. So although Gee is aiming to beat 105 hours, he will actually create a new record if he conquers 88 hours of continuous mixing. Using Pioneer CDJ-1000MK3s, a DJM-800 mixer, Funktion One loudspeakers and a whole lot of willpower, Gee plans to mix over 2,000 tracks and he's not allowed to play the same track twice. Each of the six days will therefore take on a musical theme, including Latin, mainstream and electronic.

Tiesto maps North American club tour ahead of 'Sunrise'

Trance/electronica DJ Tiesto [ tickets ] has lined up a club tour kicking off in May and running into early summer to back the latest edition of his "In Search of Sunrise" mix album series.

The Dutch producer/performer, whose real name is Tijs Verwest, will launch the run May 23 in San Francisco. Tiesto's schedule this time around shows him with multiple shows in many cities, often at different venues in the same town. The trek is due to hit 24 cities through late June. Details are below.

The DJ will "return to his club roots" on the outing, according to a press release, by playing before smaller and more intimate crowds than he faced on his world tour last year.

"I used to play two hour sets, and the commercial, mainstream crowds who listened to the radio and stuff weren't happy because I only played four or five of my own tunes, and the core fans weren't happy either, because they don't want the hear those tracks anymore, they want to hear new stuff and deeper stuff," Tiesto said in an interview last year with LiveDaily, explaining his five-hour-plus performances in New York and L.A. on his previous tour.

"I'm caught between being a DJ and an artist, so the first two-and-a-half hours I present the new album ['Elements of Live'], and you have the four elements that are the theme of the tour," he added. "Then I have the one hour that I call the power mix, all the biggest Tiesto tunes, and everything is synched, the visuals, lights, effects, pyrotechnics, everything. The last two-and-a-half hours is Tiesto the DJ, an old-school type set with trance records and big dance anthems."

"In Search of Sunrise 7: Asia," is Tiesto's latest entry in the popular mix series, which began in 1999. As with previous volumes in the series, including last year's "In Search of Sunrise 6: Ibiza," the new set will once again find Tiesto remixing songs originally recorded by other artists.

Armani, which is sponsoring the upcoming club tour, will also sponsor a 3-CD best-of compilation drawn from the various "Sunrise" albums to be sold exclusively at Armani Exchange stores.

Tiesto's most recent studio effort, last year's "Elements of Life," was the DJ's third album consisting of original compositions. The set was released last spring, peaking at No. 1 on Billboard's Electronic Music chart.

The album features vocal contributions from a variety of guest performers, including Charlotte Martin, Christian Burns, longtime Tiesto collaborator BT and Julie Thompson of electronic duo Holden & Thompson.

Hi everybody!

I just finished my little holiday in Ibiza between the gigs. I love this island! I've been coming here for years and it's never boring. I was a bit disappointed that they closed Amnesia and a few other clubs but everybody was very positive that they will be open soon again.

I am really happy with the way things are going now on the 'Elements Of Life' World Tour. In the beginning of this year I felt a lot of pressure because it's not easy to roll out a tour like this worldwide. My whole team was under pressure and the first couple of shows we had to get used to each other because it was new for everybody. And a last minute cancellation of shows doesn't help either! But now, after a couple of months on the road I can say I am really proud of everyone who works with me on this tour:

Jes is doing a great performance every time again and again. This girl has so much energy, she is amazing! I am working on a new song with her at this moment. Julie Thompson is a great performer as well. I love her voice and she sings two songs on the show now. We finished a new song called 'Somewhere Inside' and it's going down well. I will probably put it on my next mix compilation. Christian Burns is also doing an excellent job!! When you close your eyes while he sings, you hardly hear the difference between the track on my album and his live performance.

After kicking of at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol, Saturday the 31st of March 2007 Kings Hall in Belfast was the setting of Tiësto's first big Elements of Life World Tour show.

At this sold out event 8000 people experienced amazing high definition visuals combined with fireworks and a massive lightshow which made this first big Elements of Life event a not-to-miss experience!

The results of the Dancestar American Dance Music Awards were announced last night on March 19th in Miami Beach. The award for best international DJ went to Tiësto.

Tiësto was nominated for Best International DJ on January 27th. Other nominees in this category were Paul Oakenfold, Paul Van Dyk and Sasha. Other artists including Jennifer Lopez, Justin Timberlake and Underworld were nominated for awards in categories such as Best Act, Best Album and Best Video. At 8.30 p.m. Tiësto's victory was announced.

The now world-wide known artist, who has been showered with both national and international awards such as the Dutch Pop Award, the Ibiza award and the number one spot in the well renowned British DJ Magazine's Top 100. He shall also give the first stadium concert by a single DJ ever at Gelredome in Arnhem on May 10th 2003.

THE BEGINNING

Tijs Verwest was born on 17 january 1969 in Breda. His interest for music started very early,at the age of twelve he already created music. When he reached twenty it became very serieus. Now a days he is one of the most famous and beloved DJ 's in the world, according to Paul Oakenfold the "Godfather" of the English dancescene. Since november 1999 he monthly performes as a resident in Gatecrasher at Leeds, the most popular club of England. In february of that same year he has a break trough with his spectecular set at Innercity. And with Gouryella, a production with Ferry Corsten, he get's a Top-20 hit in England. But however the fame and glory of this incredible DJ the man behind DJ Tiësto is still a very normal guy from Breda.

THE FIRST CLUB YEARS

Tijs has always had the feeling that he wanted to share his music with others. He never seriously had in mind to become such a star but everything became more and bigger. At the end of the eighties he mostly played in a little club called Spock, in Breda. Every thunderday, friday and saturday from 22.00 till 4.00 hour in the morning. At that time Breda wasn't the center of House music but that has made the style of his music and the final 'sound of DJ Tiësto'. There weren't any other DJ's so he wasn't influenced by the style of others. Spock was very small club, however very extravagant like the Roxy. There was space for two hundred people.

"It didn't matter if there where less people, I could do what I wanted, the isolement from other DJ's was good. Through that I could develope myself and my music." In the beginning of his carrier as DJ he mostly played new beat and acid house, sometimes some Madonna.Tijs likes the work of Madonna because her music shows that she likes to dance. Before the release of her album there where already dancemixes. for example 'Vogue' was one of the songs of Spock.

He also loves to do sets for seven or eight hours. "Because when you play somewhere for two hours you'll never know what's before and after you. you can't play the same ID's. Seven hours is long to play and after such a performance I am exhausted, because when I play I have to translate my feelings into music. That needs a very hard concentration. Fifteen minutes before I begin I am so in myself that I don't hear anyone talking to me. Playing music is more than put some vinyl on my equipment. timing is the most important thing in house music. You can play the same tracks at two nights but at one night the public get's bored, the other night the people are partying there heads of! Beeing a DJ and perform is like a topsport."

THE BREAKTHROUGH

Well there's one set everybody knows about and that's the one DJ Tiësto played at the first Innercity. It was the breakthrough for him and his music. "Innercity was one of the best party's for me that year, not only because it was my breakthrough. at that time I didn't even realised that but the party was very big and very good. The first Innercity was for me the first big night to DJ and I think that set was one of my best ever! it was a perfect set for a perfect public!" After Innercity DJ Tiësto's DJ agenda was soon be filled with festivals like the Love Parade, Natur One, Gatecrasher summer 1999 and Hyperstate. He travelled also to party island Ibiza." The people who are coming to Ibiza just want one thing and that's good music and party! They are very open minded, I've been there three times this summer, a week and two times for four days. That's long enough! because you don't get any sleep. The party at Ibiza is 24 hours a day. When you're going to Ibiza a week is enough, than it's still fun." Tiësto also performes monthly at Gatecrasher in England. "Gatecrasher is amazing! When your standing there you see an ocean of people. It's a can full of people. Gatecrasher isn't very big, but there can party 2.500 people in it.The public is very faithfull to you. When you're in a little depression during your set the public pulls you through. They love breaks, when the beat faint they're starting to shout and scream, clapping there hands like the English footballteam has scored a penalty!it gives you the feeling you're giving a concert. The interaction with the Gatecrasher public is very special." Unless the amazing succes of his work Tijs Verwest is still the same guy as before. He wanted to do something back for the people who already where his friends before the breakthrough. In authum 1999 he started a recordshop called 'Magik the recordshop' in the hart of is home city Breda in West-Brabant. Together with Arny, Tiësto's bussinesspartner, he started there also the Blackholelabel. The serie Forbidden Paradise and the Guardian Angel label was the idea of Arny before.

1999-2003

His remix of Delerium Featuring Sarh McLachlan - The Silence was the first house track ever broadcasted on daytime radio in northe america and was four weeks in the U.K. top 10 chart. In 2001. The first releases were the 2001 anthems Flight 643 and his long awaited artist album In My Memory, and lately massive anthems from Umerk, Mark Norman and Mr Sam vs. Fred Baker. Summer 2002 Black Hole Recordings UK is born, a sister company set up to service the english market. After winning almost every dance related award in 2002 a crown was put on his career by being voted the number 1 DJ in the world in DJ Magazine's top 100.

The year 2003 has been a year filled with highlights. Tiësto is now officially the first DJ in the world ever to sell out a stadium event with a solo performance for over 25.000 people. Like Nyana, the Tiësto In Concert DVD has reached the gold status, same for the hitsingle Traffic which is the first instrumental track to reach the number 1 chart position in 23 years. In 2003 Tiësto has won 3 TMF awards (Holland & Belgium), 2 Dutch DJ awards, one MTV holland award, and was again number 1 in DJ Magzine's top 100, first time a DJ got this spot twice in a row!

Spring, 2004 Tiesto & BT released a single called 'Love Comes Again', wich almost instantly topped all the charts throughout the globe. Heineken got him to be the face of the THIRST World Tour. After touring in Europe, he visited Asia, Australia, South- then North-America. In May, 2004. he released his second artist album, 'Just Be' including the hit-single 'Love Comes Again'.

Autumn brought the rewards for the hard work: he won almost every imaginable award, including Ibiza DJ Award &8211; Best International Dj (2nd time in a row), Belgian TMF Award: Best DJ of the Year (2nd time in a row).

He topped the DJMAG TOP100 list THRID TIME IN-A-ROW! At the night of the award show, he held Tiesto &8211; In Concert II. This event &8211; in Arnhem, Gelredome &8211; was sold out &8211; 25000 tickets - only in 2 hours! Three In Concerts in 2 weeks! Tiësto to perform at the Opening Ceremony of the Olympic Games in Athens, Greece

Tiësto, twice voted the 1 DJ in the world by DJ Magazine,made Olympic history on Friday, August 13, when he became the first DJ ever to perform in an Opening Ceremony of the Olympic Games. Some four billion people were watching the planet's premier sport event, when the 28th Olympiad of the modern era opens in Greece, the land where the Olympics were born, and the City where they were revived 108 years ago. No DJ has ever performed at the Olympic Games. The President of the ATHENS 2004 Organizing Committee, Mrs. Gianna Angelopoulos-Daskalaki, heralded the announcement of Tiësto&8217;s participation, saying: "Our Ceremonies will include unique Greek artistic elements along with modern and international perspectives. While it is path-breaking, it is also natural, that a modern artist like Tiësto will contribute to the celebration we're planning on our opening night. We welcome him to Athens." In October 2003, Tiësto was approached by the Athens Organizing Committee for the Olympic Games (ATHOC) for a DJ-performance of 90 minutes during the parade of the athletes, a part of the Opening Ceremony of the Olympic Games. Tiesto’s massive ‘Elements of Life’ show – which has been touring around the US and Europe over the last year, playing to stadiums of as many as 30,000 people – finally touched down in Melbourne over the weekend. As to be expected, he was greeted with a rapturous response from fans who’d endured a massive four-year wait to see him play again. Security was tight; with strict instructions from Tiesto’s management ensuring a complete media lockdown. When he reached Melbourne Tiesto was flying off the back of a massive return to Australia, having played two exhilarating and jam-packed ‘In Search of Sunrise’ shows at Brisbane superclub Family late last week. Saturday and Sunday night saw ‘Elements of Life’ make its massive Australian debut at Festival Hall in Melbourne, and the fans weren’t left disappointed. “That was INSANE,” raved one ITMer in the Melbourne forum. “He played everything I wanted to hear and then some. Was a really good crowd too, wasn’t too packed… Everyone was just there to have fun and watch the greatest DJ ever in action.”

One of the first pools to introduce European-style sunbathing to Las Vegas, Moorea Beach Club at Mandalay Bay, is still enticing sun worshipers. The newest aquatic destination to open in Las Vegas is WET REPUBLIC. Opening this month, WET REPUBLIC is a 53,000 square-foot ultra pool at MGM Grand featuring the only two saltwater pools on The Strip. In addition to the main pool area is an open-air ultra lounge featuring signature cocktails, premium bottle and pitcher service and sophisticated cuisine. HIGH-FLYING DJ Tiesto has taken his career beyond the confines of the night club and has made a reputation as one of the world's leading electronic dance artists, writes Aubrey Buckingham

IF there was any doubt that Shanghai attracts only the top DJs in the world, then Tiesto playing at M2 last weekend should have put them to bed.

Despite lacking boybandesque good looks or demonstrating sartorial prowess (his visit was in conjunction with low-end designer-for-masses brand A/X, which released a limited edition Tiesto T-shirt), the Dutchman has made a career based on being among the planet's finest on the decks.

While he no longer ranks at the top (he placed second in "DJ Mag's Top 100" last year) according to industry barometers, the mix master is a clear cut above his peers with mainstream commercial appeal.

His record speaks for itself - four studio albums, scores of awards (and a Grammy nomination) and gigs all over the world, including the opening ceremony of the 2004 Athens Olympics Games.

The Dutchman was especially pleased to visit the Chinese mainland for the third time.

"Every time it gets better," said the 39 year-old. "The crowds are more enthusiastic and there is more awareness of my name here."

The DJ/producer even went on the record to say: "There would definitely be an In Search of Sunrise album based on China."

The Sunrise series is an annual compilation inspired by specific locations; recent albums have been based on Latin America (2005), Los Angeles (2006) and Ibiza (2007).

With the spotlight on the nation's capital this summer, when the series is to be released and his love for the country (he has a club/restaurant, Cineac, that serves Chinese cuisine), it would be of little surprise if the astute businessman cashes in on the interest garnered by the Games and releases his China compilation at the same time.

Born Tijs Verwest, the Dutchman has been instrumental in raising the profile of trance music and leading it to shed the image of bubblegum-cheese.

Inspired by a love for sharing music with people, Tiesto's career began in the mid-1990s traveling his native land and eventually progressed into club gigs around the world.

As with a number of acts, the turntablist launched his own record label to support his career.

Black Hole Records was established in 1997 and assembled a stable of musicians that helped Tiesto further his vision of trance.

After years of trailblazing clubs in all corners of the Earth and shooting to the top of the DJ charts (Tiesto topped the "DJ Mag Top 100" three years running from 2002-2004), the electronic music maestro has evolved his career beyond the confines of his genre.

Styling himself in the mold of a rock star, Tiesto was the first solo DJ to sell out a stadium event to 25,000 people in May 2003. The event, in Arnheim's Gelredome in the Netherlands, was a massive success and was later released on DVD.

Tiesto went on to perform more events of such magnitude in Europe, releasing another DVD in 2005, before bringing his audio-visual extravaganza across the pond to the United States.

"Concerts are way better," he said, describing the sensation of entertaining tens of thousands of screaming, adoring fans. "Playing for a sea of people like that gives you a big boost and a big rush.

"A club gig is more comfortable and you feel like you are doing your own thing. If I play a club it could be the same as playing in someone's house."

Tiesto's popularity was further cemented when he was asked to perform as the athletes marched out during the opening ceremony of the 2004 Summer Olympic Games.

Intriguingly enough, as he noted in the liner notes for his subsequently released studio album Parade of the Athletes, the International Olympic Committee requested that the music not include lyrics as they could be taken the wrong way.

The Breda native described the gig as: "Amazing, one of the best in my life," and he would "definitely commit to another opening ceremony, including the one this August," if asked. However, he believed that the idea was kept as a one-off show. "It would be a great opportunity, but I think Beijing shouldn't ask me because they should do something original."

Despite this, local fans are still privileged to enjoy his music live. Tiesto has toured extensively around China's mainland, and has played at venues in Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Chengdu, Beijing not to mention Shanghai. His latest trip, to promote last year's Elements of Life album, took him to Hong Kong, Beijing and Shanghai and will take him around Asia into May.

The globetrotter, who rates Privilege (Ibiza), Mansion (Miami), Ruby Sky (San Francisco) and Sven Vath's Cocoon (Frankfurt) as the best clubs he has visited, was impressed by local venues but found them lacking a key element.

"There's a lot more money here than in European clubs, and everything is so nicely decorated and detailed. The only thing is they spend a lot of money on furniture but not on the sound systems."

Besides his club commitments in Europe, which are a lot more selective these days, Tiesto will spend the summer working on his productions, further indication that his career has evolved and proving the DJ to be more "exclusive" these days.

"I do a lot of remixes; productions are more important to me than they used to be. I will always be a trance DJ, but if you use the word 'trance' it suggests I only play a certain sound. I think I play a diverse sound, and though trance is the main part of my DJ set there's also other stuff in there."

Ultra Records will continue dictating the modern dance-club paradigm until further notice; the compilations the imprint churns out invariably focus on who’s-who remixes of the world’s biggest songs. In March, to cite just one example, Tommie Sunshine compiled Ultra Rock Remixed, which included techno-fied versions of tunes from Good Charlotte, Glitch, Mindless Self Indulgence and Gang of Four. Sunshine’s a weird guy, with his ZZ Top look and never shutting up about his love for his hot girlfriend, but he’s a go-to guy in that space, as DJ 4 Strings (a 2-man collaborative fronted by Carlo Resoort) is within the realm of progressive trance.

If you’ve been out of the scene for a few years, you’re advised to listen to a few samples before committing to this album. 4 Strings is into progressive trance, a major jump from traditional trance, which is characterized by its hyperactive thumping beats and anthemic melodies. Progressive trance has a much more subtle way of implementing high BPM (beats per minute) counts, thus if you’re expecting crazy-ass stuff like Darude’s “Sandstorm,” you’re going to be bummed.

Thin White Duke retrofits Gwen Stefani’s mid-tempo ghetto-torch “4 in the Morning” with a lot of extra blips and whaps and maybe one or two upticks in overall speed, but it comes off more as a glorified house tune than a laser-blasted mind-blower. More obvious is the Vission vs Aude remix of Hilary Duff’s “Stranger,” which is without question general-issue house.

So it goes through disc 1, the most action coming from Tiesto’s original “Break My Fall.” Disc 2 is more enticing going by the track list alone – Above & Beyond have the progressive trance genre down better than anybody, and their “Good For Me” is a sight for sore ears. Other pay-attention names on disc 2 include Sander van Doorn (with the original “Grasshopper” in all its cataclysmic, system-crashing glory) and Armin van Buuren’s hard-charging “This World is Watching Me.” Speaking of van Buuren, keep in mind that his more traditional State of Trance albums are the ones trance-heads buy up without hesitation; the progressive trance thing is cute and all, but it’s ripe for creating mass confusion, which has indeed happened on more than one occasion.

Eastern Blok, Folk Tales (Eastern Blok Records)

A no-brainer choice for NPR freaks, and in fact the band – formerly the Goran Ivanovic Group – made an appearance recently on the network. Ivanovic is a Croatian guitarist, joined here by flutist/saxophonist Doug Rosenberg to manage all the harmonics, which are in turn backed by top-drawer jazz bass and drums. The deal here is a pastiche of pan-cultural folk music (Middle Eastern and East European, mostly), classical and Spyro Gyra-style jazz-prog, a mishmash broad and Hollywood enough to have gotten the band a few spots on the soundtrack for Angelina Jolie’s Wanted. Being that it’s Ivanovic’s vessel, we steer into Django Reinhardt speed-picking waters first off with “Tango Pajdusko,” a few Borat-like passages sneaking in to spell out “eclectic” for listeners unfamiliar with the concept of polyrhythm. More Borat on “Balkan Healer” didn’t impress me as much as “Sorrow’s Secret,” a slower piece that’s symphonic in scope. You’ll have to pardon a short curmudgeonly segue here. A lot of people would die for this stuff, and it’s won a lot of recognition, but if it was made for anything, it’s NPR program-reminder wallpaper, which bums me out – I’m getting quite weary of the network’s tacit cheerleading of the ongoing Bush crisis, but don’t mind me.

Hurt, Vol II (self-released)

Hurt didn’t hit the New Artist chart at #1 simply because their drummer’s the son of Zep/Van Halen producer Andy Johns; they’re worthwhile because they treat nu-metal like the urinal it is. Best described as a cross between Live and Candlebox, they’re organic without telegraphing such, like a crew of hillbillies out to throw a monkey in the wrench of a Linkin Park listening party, sort of like Dropbox but with real purpose in life and no sourball-puckered Creed vocals. Their entire trip can be grokked for what it is through a few listens to teaser single “Ten Ton Brick,” a drag-and-drop exercise in ringout riffage, Ozzy arpeggios and front-guy J. Loren’s feigned instability. When in ballad mode, they don’t screw things up by playing fist-in-the-air cartoon characters, this demonstrated in “Aftermath” through simple but wonderfully ambient piano/guitar interplay and Loren’s fragile – occasionally croaking – normal-dude vocals; the song works not just on the level of Bic-flick arena-metal-stopper but could have made it onto any modern pop record. Only misstep is “Abuse of Sid,” whose refrain is pure Candlebox filler.

Creature Feature, The Greatest Show Unearthed (Sumerian Records)
The demographic that goes in big for Corpse Bride can jump right in and start bobbing its collective head to this wholly similar product. Firmly rooted in visual imagery – from say a Maurice Sendak-inspired Tim Burton re-energized for a go at whimsical goth cartoons – it’s comfort food for the ears of pancake-face hallow-teens and people whose collections of Famous Monsters of Filmland magazines are pathetically gigantic (guilty). Old-school kraut-electro outfit Das Ich feinted in this direction with their 2006 album, Cabaret, but couldn’t muster the conceptual nerve to provide the record the constant barrage of honking calliope and carnival barker bullhorn it needed, but Creature Feature (presently on tour with Wednesday 13, goth’s answer to Iggy Pop) are burdened with no such qualms, trotting out all manner of squishy, bony, needle-fanged Muppets doing a lot of Nightmare Before Christmas-like la-la-la-ing accompanied by 80s synth lines straight out of Lost Boys and Fright Night.

Otep, The Ascension (Koch Records)

It’s odd that Otep Shamaya, after being freed from her Capitol Records contract and handing her life over to the world’s biggest indie, chose to skip the glaze-eyed spoken word babblings that put her on the map. Not completely, mind you; she goes into a Saw-vs-martians stream of consciousness soliloquy for the entire length of the hidden track, and she’s still the spookiest person in metal, what with her Lucia Cifarelli-like puma-screeches and beware-the-nutty-chick hiccups hot-linked to every song. But this is a comparatively straightforward screamo/nu-metal exercise, which in turn puts the burden on her to make her (always creepy) poetry heard over fast-chugging KMFDM guitars and double-bass breaks; sometimes it works, sometimes you miss the wigged-out spontaneity. Music-wise the band remains edgier and more slickly produced than anything the Metal Bladers are knocking together between band-member firings; in “Confrontation” she makes a play for the Evanescence kids, blending goth and sheer hardness with riffing you might hear from Megadeth. Similarly, “Noose & Nail” throws its Amy Lee pomposity into an industrial-metal blast-furnace in time to prevent it from becoming completely useless.

Paul Oakenfold, Greatest Hits & Remixes (Ultra Records)

Until recently, a greatest-hits album from someone who spins records for a living would have been near-unthinkable. Oakenfold, however, is held in higher esteem by the mainstream than even Tiesto, never mind guys like Paul van Dyk. A lot of this stuff you’ve heard if you ever watch movies – “Dread Rock” is here in all its Darude-like power-flute glory, as is his remix of David Arnold’s James Bond Theme from Die Another Day (in turn cleverly paired up with the like-minded spaghetti-secret-agent guitar of “Ready Steady Go” from the Korean disco scene in Collateral). Other material here is lesser-known to non-wonk dance-clubbers – English techno band Underworld recently released the hypnotic, very danceable album Oblivion with Bells, and the band’s autobahn-cruising “Born Slippy Nuxx” received an Oakenfold makeover that’s part of this package. Massive Attack’s urban-desperation-opus “Unfinished Sympathy” may not have been my first choice to get remodeled into a deep house joint (just picture “Karmacoma” getting its brains dubbed out), but then again, if rock critics ruled the world you wouldn’t want to be in it.

Raine Maida, The Hunters Lullaby (Kingnoise/Nettwerk Records)

The single nicest surprise so far this music-product off-season is, perplexingly enough, Canadian. Maida, the singer for Our Lady Peace, watched his band run the table at Canadian awards shows and rack up sales everywhere but here in the US, where their biggest exposure came via the song “Whatever,” which, as luck would have it, crazy-murdering steroid-gulper Chris Benoit adopted as his WWE intro song. The band progressively toned down their hard rock, story of everybody’s life, but that didn’t play in Peoria either, so here he’s gone solo to see what American lovin’s in store by edging a little toward the hip-hop side.

That’s not to say he’s decked out in grills nowadays, but the menacing piano loop in album roll-out track “Careful What You Wish For” does forebode gat-fire and hard pipe-hittin’ hood tales. It never deteriorates into in-your-face honky rap, though; Maida mixes a few unobtrusive, natural rhyme-flows up with his Sinex-blasted nu-metal croak, sounding nervous but musically aware. “Yellow Brick Road” is a drop-dead post-Beck hit that seems to have simply slipped out of him; great chorus and enough hip-hop to inspire bursts of table-drumming in the sports bars down here in Bushworld, one would think. Just in case, though, “China Doll” tables a little French-café alt-folk for the home crowd.In sum, the album’s a grower if given half a chance, familiar but a little dark and cold and unsure of itself, although it really needn’t have been.

Sebastian Bach, Angel Down (EMI Records)

No matter what cultural vacuum Sebastian Bach gets sucked into, he always runs back to his beloved Screamy Screamington thrash and axe-demon crunch. There were the Broadway turns, the Gilmore Girls episodes, and the reality TV BFF heart-to-hearts with Kurupt, but you didn’t seriously think that a massive shift of artistic paradigm was taking place in Johann’s head, did you? Plus, for a while there it looked like Guns n Roses were going to get back together, and there was no way Bach was gonna sit still while those guys ran off with all the hot Mensa babes. Besides, we all know that those art-snob departures were heartfelt but overdone atonements for the Homophobic Slur On The Tee Shirt Incident back in ’89. But I won’t mention that.

When Velvet Revolver was forming, Slash gave Bach a tryout but canned the idea, saying that the sessions sounded too much like Skid Row. Jeez, what was he shooting for, Collective Soul? Because that’s the thing – if Bach’s the singer, it’s Skid Row. QED, then, Angel Down is a Skid Row album. When guest screamer Axl Rose trades screams with Bach during the cover of Aerosmith’s “Back in the Saddle,” he sounds like he’s been helplessly assimilated, stressing to keep up. As usual, there’s polite thrash-metal, blues scales getting beaten to pulps, and Bach’s screaming – nothing new, a fish gotta swim thing.

Shocking Pinks, Shocking Pinks (Astralwerks Records)

This late entry was a stowaway on an Astralwerks care package that included the new Air Traffic LP, which doesn’t hit stores until February. Untested new albums are scarcer than Nintendo Wiis this time of year, so I had three choices: review this, which is old news; review one of the 10 billion Compost releases that I’ve been ignoring for months now (I’m on Ultra’s promo list, so why pretend to be engrossed in unusable Euro-tech acts like Jazzanova?); or do a high-school-book-report-style snoozer on a best-of or live album, which is all that’s been coming out.

For once, luck shone. By going with the most interesting-looking thing (pretty much anyone would give a band called Shocking Pinks at least fifteen seconds to make their case) I can now atone for the Bill Buckner I pulled last year by tossing Cold War Kids’ Robbers and Cowards on the Teensy Bit Too Late To Review stack instead of doing my job and writing it up months before every natural-born-hipster on earth started wearing Cold War Kids tee shirts.

Like Robbers and Cowards, Shocking Pinks is made of parts you’ve heard before, but taken as a whole it’s a jaw-dropper. Nick Harte’s absinthe-drowned voice synchs perfectly with the music’s paisley drone, blurry shoegaze guitars and New Order-like rubber-band bass, but there’s a depth to all of it that can only be described anecdotally – for me, it was like hearing early Cure tunes for the first time; minimalism gone wild. Very nice surprise here.

Nightlife 911!!!

Hi. I'm writing to you from the bowels of underground club connoisseur hell, a.k.a. a gay bar in Las Vegas on St. Patrick's Day during spring break.

Try not to imagine it. On the giant video screen: a 2005 frat-boy rave remix of the Cranberries' "Zombie." In the glass tanks lining the dance floor: live piranhas. Streaming through the door: distressed embroidered jeans and bleached-out cocka'dos. Kill me.

"What did you expect?" Hunky Beau reminds me not-so-gently. "This city has the freakin' Liberace Museum. Drop the snob act." So I take some heart in the equality of it all. The Vegas homo-horror crowd out by the airport's no different from the straight-when-sober one thronging the Strip, except the lesbians are real and the other women aren't. Or rather, they're 50 percent less real. Surgery is confusing! It's like silicone algebra. And don't let's even glance at Vegas menswear, 'k? When did Affliction team up with Hurley and Crocs to make Jams?

Other than the occasional squawk of stale reggaetón emanating from pastel Hummers on West Tropicana — not to mention a slew of rowdies screeching "The Star-Spangled Banner" throughout New York New York (never forget!) — the charge-card cocktails, Timba-hop tunes, and space-age bachelor ultralounge aesthetic of omnisexual fantasyland are bottle-serviced with a splash of Burner du Soleil myshtique. In Las Vegas, the apex of a corker evening is a Coyote Ugly boobarella with red contact lenses and vampire fangs writhing on a dry-iced bar to DJ Tiësto. The only thing missing, really, is a topless raver girl revue with dildo glowsticks and peekaboo JNCO jeans. I'm copyrighting this idea immediately.

Everything's slathered in pimps-and-ho cheese and infernal strobing ultraviolet beams, grinding my delicate complexion into hamburger. Is this what you want, America? Awful-looking skin?

Like Manhattan and Miami — where three-quarters of San Francisco's dance music movers-and-shakers are currently scratching their bikini waxes at the bubbly-drenched, forever-2001 Winter Music Conference — Vegas has ...

now officially Disneyfied the salacious grit from my fond partial-memories of nightlife there, on and off the Strip. Bring on the recession, darlings! I'm all for having wild fun — this, after all, is how a majority of Midwesterners will be introduced to club culture — and I realize that a vibrant and shocking underground depends on a slick surface limelight to tunnel beneath. But please: what happens in Las Vegas, stay there.

Lady Go Boom Enough grumpy, let's party! You may remember the excitably gorgeous Lady Tigra as one half of '80s Miami Bass female electro-rap phenom L'Trimm, whose sub-woofin' 1988 hymn to cracked windshields, "Cars That Go Boom" (Hot Productions), raised the fluorescent-suspendered rafters of club kids nationwide at the time. I was there, and Tigra was fierce. Now she's back — grrrl! — with a slinky-nasty new album, Please Mr. Boombox (High Score), and a savvy plan to retake the alternative nightlife spotlight by teaming up with the cheekiest promoters on the West Coast. Fresh from her balls-out show at Los Angeles's latest actually great party, Mustache Mondays, she'll sink her claws into your dancey-pants with gender-bending vocalist and performance artiste extraordinaire Jer Ber Jones and the ever-beaky DJ Chicken at Cafe Du Nord on March 28. Her warped OMD-sampling jam "A Moon Song," especially, has been freaking the red zones in my headphones lately. And please note that I have not made a single tragic Tatiana the Tiger joke in this catty plug, mostly because I wish I'd mauled that hot dead Indian boy first and I'm still bitter. So there.

The Opium group is heating up South Beach for the Winter Music Conference. If you’re one of the fortunate ones who will be in town for a week full of great music and parties, here is the scoop.

The big highlight of the week will be when the music god, DJ Tiësto will take on the turntables at club Mansion on Saturday March 29. Other DJ’s that will also be spinning at Mansion include Roger Sanchez (March 26), Sasha & John Digweed (March 27). Even Hollywood spinsters DJ AM and Steve Aoki will be making their way to the 2008 Winter Music Conference with a special set together on March 28 at Mansion.

It doesn’t end there, some of the world’s most famous DJ’s are making a stop at one of our favorite Miami spot, club SET. From Bob Sinclar who will tell the “World To Hold On” at the Playboy Mansion (March 28th) to Benny Benassi & Dirty South (March 30th) Miami is gonna be the place to be!

Tiesto wants to put you in a trance

Netherlands-bred Tijs Verwest -- known as DJ Tiesto when he's behind the turntables -- surely knows how to keep the crowds moving to his hypnotic mash-ups of the trance sounds found in albums such as his Grammy nominated Elements of Life.

So, it's no surprise he craves a similarly lively atmosphere when it's time to enjoy a little downtime, which makes Miami one of his favorite ''stay at and play at'' spots.

Missed Tiesto Friday at the Ultra Music Festival in Bicentennial Park? Then try to sneak past the velvet ropes to watch him spinning at Mansion on Saturday night. From what he told us, there's nothing he loves more than a packed South Florida dance floor.

What are your favorite spots?

``Talula -- a small restaurant across from Mokai, where I love to play. It's nice and small and cool to hang out in, to disconnect and unwind. The times I've been there they play house music, which is a great switch from what I do for a living, which is trance.''

Any complaints?

``The clubs are great to play in. The only thing that stresses me out is the way clubs can be managed. It bothers me when they oversell the club. Fans buy a ticket a week before, then are told they can't get in because it's packed.''

What can people expect from your show?

'A bangin' good time filled with classic old and new Tiesto. I'm always excited to play. In general, I look at crowds and see how they react. Sometimes I never know what I'm going to play until the last minute and just go with the feeling.''

Will we be seeing more of you?

``Yes. I actually bought a house in Miami about two years ago at Aqua on Allison Island. It's a more residential area, but it's also no more than 10 minutes away from all the action. I see it as an investment for my future and as the perfect place for when I get older. They truly made me an offer I couldn't refuse.''

The campsite which is even bigger this year has hot showers and an outdoor cinema. As well as the music there's usually The Urban Village with Hip-Hop DJs, Skate Ramps, BMX Riders, Break Dancers and Graffiti Artists, and extreme rides in the fairground.

Global Gathering has now been granted a permanent license, meaning that the festival will be a guaranteed fixture on the music events calendar. The license, which received no public objections, has been granted to allow the event breathing space to grow even bigger year on year.

An alchemic welcome to the world’s best

I can’t think of a better opening for this article than to just say that the world’s best disc jockey is coming to Manila for one night only. Tiesto, thrice consecutive topnotcher of DJ Mag’s prestigious survey, continues his world tour to promote his 2007 album, Elements of Life.

Netherlands-born Tijs Verwest has used many aliases in the last 28 years that he has been DJ-ing. Today, the man whose list of achievements is off the charts is simply known as Tiesto. He is the first disc jockey to ever play live on stage in front of an audience at an Olympic games.

“The opportunity to perform my music for billions of people around the globe will be the greatest highlight of my life, I am honored to be part of the biggest sports event in the world,” he refers to his Olympic experience.

Tiesto’s music is for the most part trance and progressive trance. Just like most accomplished DJs, he also dabbles in producing and remixing. His production, Just Be, appeared in the CD, Nip/Tuck: Original TV Soundtrack. He contributed the song “Gold Rush” to Playstation’s Wipeout Pure. Kane’s “Rain Down on Me (Tiesto Remix)” is featured in the video game, Fifa Football 2004.

His musical influence goes as far as Reebok creating two shoe models in his honor, ‘Tiesto’ and ‘Run the DJ Tiesto.’ Even Armani has jumped the Tiesto bandwagon just last December with a limited edition Tiesto/A|X T-shirt. Tiesto is also the official worldwide ambassador of the Dance4Life Foundation that promotes HIV/AIDS awareness.

Having played for crowds up to a whopping 250,000, he has covered the globe from coast to coast. He has taken over leading dance destinations from Ipanema Beach to Las Vegas, from Johannesburg to Amsterdam.

The reason for his second Manila visit is his fourth studio album, the Grammy-nominated Elements of Life. The 13-track CD, or some 80 minutes worth of heart-pumping trance, contains the remix version of “He’s a Pirate,” the theme song of Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl.

Tiesto has been touring his album since March 20 of last year. Earth, water, air and fire formed the crux of the visual treatment for the tour, captured in the Elements of Life World Tour DVD. The level of production was one that is never before seen in the dance music scene. This included state-of-the-art special effects, moving water systems synched with the music and high-def video screens. The glitzy Alchemy Euroclub brings Tiesto back to play for the city’s denizens on April 19 at the venue’s Main Event Center. General admission is at P1,500 per head. Tickets are available at Alchemy and selected Odyssey outlets.

As revealed on inthemix recently, global dance music superstar Tiesto is set to return to Australia in late April. Trance fans unite, this is the tour you’ve been waiting for! It will be the Dutchman’s first visit to Australia in 4 years, and judging by the response to the initial announcements it’s clear that Tiesto’s many local fans have been waiting for this news with keen anticipation for quite some time!

As promised, inthemix can now reveal that Tiesto will be touching down for shows in Brisbane, Melbourne and Sydney over the last weekend of April (Anzac Day long weekend) and first weekend of May. Presented by Hardware, Prime Time Management, Transmission, Family and Killrockstar, inthemix is a proud supporter of Tiesto’s return tour! The tour has so far visited over 70 cities across the globe and is in support of Tiesto’s third artist album, ‘Elements of Life’.

The venues selected for Tiesto’s Melbourne and Sydney ‘In Concert’ shows are said to have been carefully chosen to meet the Dutch legend’s exact specifications, preferring to play arenas with “clear quality sound and access to a large scale, yet intimate feel as Tiesto likes to be close to the crowd (2 meters away in fact).” Tickets go onsale Tuesday February 12th, and an exclusive allocation will be available right here on inthemix.

Tiesto recently gained accolades from American music megalith Billboard.com, with the website naming him and his Elements Of Life world tour as one of 2007’s highlights. “Tiesto’s spectacular tour featured sky-high video screens, pyrotechnics and trippy appearances by Blue Man Group,” enthused the US media outlet. “With a lighter-hoisting rock scope and a ‘concert-style’ set programmed to match the visual onslaught, the tour blazed a new trail for DJ performance.”
