Memory Tree

Throw this in your car stereo for a late night drive down a long road in the brush. The mood has been set for this, Mike Shannon’s third full-length artist album, Memory Tree. That is, if you’re scouring the hills for roots techno that’s soft, mellow and glitchy. This record should have a place in your collection for nights to relax by the figurative fireplace. Shannon makes his entrance unassumingly with the low crackling audio of “Beyond Incubation,” reminding us of the mood warm vinyl can set. The album carries on into cleaner and more defined sounds that resemble brilliantly shined metal. The third track, “Wolf Module,” continues down the urban road, creating a musical backdrop for a factory filled with underground mechanics and gears. “Dr X” brings in sounds cavernous and upbeat that would mix into any deep house set in a club that pays homage to the classics. Memory Tree is airy, luminescent, deep and rhythmic. It holds elements of many electronic styles — Detroit techno, ambient and house — bringing them all together in this warm place where a genre is merely a noun, and music never ceased to be real.

In what way could the music industry in Canada show more support for techno?
The industry in Canada can’t realistically support techno more than it already is. Techno has always been a relatively underground thing in Canada but recognized worldwide as a quality breeding ground for some great labels and acts. Plus 8 and Minus are technically Canadian labels, for example. There aren’t any other outlets to support techno in Canada that aren’t already being exploited. I mean, I guess editors at magazines like yours could give myself or other artists a cover once in a while [laughs]. And I guess the majors could take electronic music a little more seriously and sign something that doesn’t sound like it belongs in every other Molson Canadian commercial. Look at what the Dutch did with Tiesto. Maybe the Canadian majors can try the same thing with some good-looking kid from Winnipeg or Yellowknife.

What sparked the creation of Memory Tree?
The Memory Tree seed was planted when I was arriving in Berlin. I just set up a new studio and a lot of ideas started to flow. A lot of things personally were happening that inspired a lot of the tracks. It just made sense to compile things and work on a new album for 2008 but I didn’t know where or how it would exactly end up when I started working on it. I personally wanted to write a collection of tracks that broke some new ground for myself, shying away from the ultra-minimal and trying to write some more soulful techno.

And what was your experience finally releasing a record with Plus 8/Minus?
Working with Plus 8 was like a childhood dream of mine coming true. I always had a ton of respect for Rich, John and the artists involved with the label. Some of the first techno records I owned were on Plus 8 and to be a part of that as a Canadian was a milestone in my career. Running a label, my experience working with Rich and the Minus guys has been an interesting and inspiring. Just seeing how the whole machine works and how it’s possible to create a label like this that’s almost completely independent and compromise-free. Rich most definitely tries to follow through with things so that they work out exactly the way he had planned it. Of course, things are never perfect every time but they certainly plan them to be and go to great lengths to make sure it comes out looking that way. (Plus 8)

Up and coming Calgarian Andrew F is ready to rock MacEwan Hall with Reckless Abandon

Together with his bandmates Dennis Hann, Sean Abercrombie and Matt Boutin, Andrew Franks will be lighting up the MacEwan Hall Ballroom Friday night in one of those shows that you'll surely be bragging about seeing years down the road when they make it big. Special guests Calm Asa Coma and Crystal Kid will be opening.

Friday night's concert also marks the CD release party for his debut album, Reckless Abandon. For every ticket sold to the show, Andrew will donate $5 to the Calgary Food Bank. Considering tickets are only $22 to begin with, it's an offer that tops the generosity of many older, supposedly wiser, philanthropist types.

A few great things that went down in Calgary this month:

- The annual ladies-only Peanut Butter Classic charity golf classic raised $72,000 for the Youville Residence Society of Alberta and 44 lb. of peanut butter for the Food Bank, making these chicks with sticks the Charity Superwomen of September.

- Best Bash on our radar this month was a tie between the ridiculously sold-out DJ Tiesto concert at Flames Central and Amanda Hehr's 30th birthday party at La Vita e Bella.

- Notable new additions for the palates of the people in September included Rush Restaurant on 9 Ave. S.W. and Olives in Arriva. And lest we forforget our new neighbourhood favourite -- Little Lebanon Pita and Donair on 17 Ave. S.W.

- Most underrated party place of the month: The Marquee Room -- made all the more fab this month thanks to the Film Fest.

RENOVATION RUNDOWN

Unless you were living under an evening-news-hour rock last week, you likely heard about CTV's Operation Renovation initiative.

The annual event sees a local non-profit group benefit from a much-needed makeover, while all sorts of generous volunteers and local businesses roll their sleeves up to make it happen.

For the fourth year in a row, reno-experts Albi Renova and president Brian Mauer stepped up to bear the brunt of the designing, planning and interior finishing for the 2008 Operation Renovation charity of choice -- the Calgary Women's Emergency Shelter.

Home to as many as 40 women and children per night, the space has seen its fair share of wear and tear, and was in desperate need of an overall renovation.

After an entire week of CTV anchors, reporters, volunteers and personalities picking up a paint brush and pitching in their time, the front foyer, living room area, therapy room and kitchen were all revamped to be a place of light and hope.

While the reno has wrapped up, it's never too late to donate. To lend a hand, call 403-539-5130.

Tiesto triumphs at DJ Awards

Tiesto, Richie Hawtin and David Guetta were among the winners at last night’s DJ Awards, which took place in Ibiza.

Tiesto won the international DJ award, Hawtin triumphed in the techno category and Guetta won the house award.

Special awards were presented to those who have dedicated their services to the music industry including Bill Kelly, co-founder of the Miami Music Conference, and Beatport founder Jonas Tempel.

The awards were hosted by Capital DJ Des Paul and included live performances from Ron Carroll and Fragma.

LUSH! goes electric this Saturday night.
Or, to be precise, the venue will become an ‘Elektrik Playground"!

The genre bending Electrik Playground returns to the UK for the first event after a sell out season with Tiesto at the world’s biggest club, Privilege in Ibiza.

And that means that Riley and Durrant will be thrashing out a three hour set together with Carl Bryant and resident DJ Col Hamilton.

Riley & Durrant’s famed club night, Electrik Playground (run with Adam Sheridan) has taken the north of England by storm, and is now one of the most consistently packed-out nights at Leed’s finest venue Mission.

Continuing the unique success of his geographically inspired mix compilations, Tiësto looks to explore yet another region by taking us to the Far East this time with In Search of Sunrise 7 – Asia.

In Search Of Sunrise 7 – Asia, which was mixed and recorded in Thailand, captures the peaceful and intensively passionate way of life together with the vigorous activity that Tiësto encountered during his tour through the region this spring. With past stops in Latin America, Los Angeles and last year's Ibiza, Tiësto shows that Asia gave him the inspiration to deliver a brand new, double disc mix compilation, which beautifully expresses what he experienced on his journeys.

On In Search of Sunrise 7 – Asia, Tiësto offers up a seamless trip through the latest and best trance, house and techno with an Asian flair, spread over two full length discs. Tiësto announces residency at Privilege, Ibiza, for summer 2008

For the first time in three years Tiësto returns to the island of Ibiza to host his own weekly residency at Privilege.

Tiësto will be the resident every Monday, starting on the 7th of July until the closing party on the 22nd of September. Tiësto will deliver his four hour deejay sets in the style of his 'In Search of Sunrise' series, everything dedicated to the atmosphere that can only be found on the Balearic Islands.

To underline its reputation as biggest club in the world, Privilege has set up a Tiësto customized event for his residency; complete with a totally new and future tech production, a newly designed and customized deejay booth, a full state of the art LED back wall, and the latest new design when it comes to light and video. All this combined with the sound of Tiësto will create an atmosphere, incomparable to any of the club nights on Ibiza and it will without a doubt deliver the highest quality night this summer on the entire island.

Ibiza has always been a source of positive inspiration for Tiësto and in 2007; he named the sixth volume of his In Search of Sunrise series after the island. Tiesto Announces Release of Elements of Life Remixed

After the success of his original Elements of Life album, Tiësto returns with a brand new remixed edition.

All eleven tracks of the original album are presented in a remixed version, where the song 'He's A Pirate' is now replaced with the previously unavailable 'No More Heroes', a track Tiësto especially recorded for the performances of the Blue Man Group during some of his Elements of Life World Tour concerts.

The remixes included were made by established artists like Cosmic Gate, Dirty South and Fonzerelli to name but a few and several of these new versions have been played extensively by Tiësto during his Elements of Life World Tour.

Tiesto Wins Idma Award for Best Global dj and Isos 6

The board of the annual International Dance Music Awards at the famous Winter Music Conference in Miami announced that Tiësto won the IDMA award for Best Global DJ.
Tiësto, who won the title for the second time, also won the award in the category of Best Full Length DJ Mix CD with his successful mix compilation 'In Search Of Sunrise 6 – Ibiza'.

2008 is the 23rd year of The International Dance Music Awards and is part of the annual Winter Music Conference in Miami, which is considered the most important international business fair in the world of dance.

Official release date Elements of Life DVD announced

Tiësto's Elements of Life World Tour DVD will be officially released in the Benelux on the 29th of February and from the 7th of March onwards in the rest of the world.
The long anticipated live DVD will feature a live registration of Tiësto's concert in Parken Stadium, Copenhagen and comes in Blu Ray and regular DVD format.

Both double disc versions cover over four hours of Tiësto's concert in Denmark; the additional footage such as an exciting On The Road feature, music videos, TV commercials and a full soundtrack in MP3 of the entire live set will be available on the DVD only.

The board of the Dutch BUMA has announced that Tiësto won the BUMA golden harp award 2007. The harp award is considered one of the most important prizes in Dutch music industry.

With a little over 25,000 people attending the performance and enjoying the music of Tiësto, the atmosphere captured on video gives a fantastic impression of what the Elements of Life World Tour is all about.

Tiesto Guest host on Radio 1 Dance Anthems

On the 11th of January, Tiësto will host the famous BBC dance program 'Dance Anthems' on Radio 1 from 23.00 – 01.00. The regular host of the show Dave Pearce, currently on vacation, has invited several DJs to host his program during his absence.

Tiësto will be playing an hour of his favourite classics, combined with hot new tracks. To end his two hour presentation, Tiësto will deliver an exclusive 30 minute live mix featuring the latest cuts from his own collection.

Dance4Life, the youth of today and Tiesto Together Raising Awareness on hiv and aids

HIV and AIDS form a major problem all over the globe. Dance4Life tries to do something about this, together with thousands of students and ambassadors like Tiësto.
Currently, almost 40 million people in the world are infected with HIV and 90% of them live in developing countries. Dance4Life actively involves youth all around the world in pushing back HIV and AIDS and fighting the stigma and taboos surrounding them. Youth can participate in Dance4Life through Dance4Life School Projects and Act4Life, which isn't about books, preaching or homework; it's about dance, music, drumming, videos, and the youth of today.

Tiësto is the ambassador of Dance 4 Life and recently he visited a few projects that Dance4Life currently runs in South Africa. He considers the concept of Dance 4 Life to be very effective: 'The way Dance4Life engages young people around the world to do something about the HIV/AIDS problem is very powerful. They offer young people an attractive way to do something themselves, and reward them with a spectacular event. The combination of serious content and entertainment assures that Dance4Life gets young people on the move.'

Tiesto Club Life Podcast Passes the download mark of 100000 Per Show

Tiësto's radio show Podcast, 'Tiësto's Club Life', passed the number of 100,000 downloads per show this weekend.
Hosted by Tiësto himself, the radio program 'Tiësto's Club Life', was first broadcast in April of this year. The show, which airs every Friday night as a two hour feature on Dutch national radio, is also available as an abridged one hour Podcast version every following Monday. Tiësto presents this Podcast for all international users in English.

The success of his Elements of Life World Tour 2007-2008 has inspired Tiësto to team up with Reebok again for the introduction of a unique new shoe that was especially designed for the Elements of Life tour.

The new Tiësto shoe is the latest in the RBK DJ-line and will be released as a limited edition of only a 1000 pairs. The shoes will be numbered (0001-1000) in reflective material and all sets will come with a white and red lace. An extra feature added to the contents of the shoebox is a special limited-edition Tiësto-RBK CD, featuring rare and exclusive remixes from the Elements of Life album.

Elements of Life album reaches gold status in Romania!

After reaching the gold status in The Netherlands, Belgium and Hungary, Tiësto adds another notch to his belt with his highly acclaimed artist album 'Elements of Life', which hit the gold status in Romania this week.
The album, currently the blueprint for his 'Elements of Life' world tour, took the music industry by storm and struck gold on the very first day of release in The Netherlands. Belgium and Hungary soon followed. Now adding Romania to this list, Tiësto continues the outstanding success of his previous albums.

'Elements of Life' delivers signature trance tracks like 'Ten Seconds Before Sunrise', 'Bright Morningstar' and of course the title song. Tiesto Elements of Life Concert in Denmark Sold Out

This weekend, Tiësto will continue his Elements of Life world tour with a sold out performance in the famous Parken Stadium in Copenhagen, Denmark.

More than 22,000 people will experience the first ever DJ concert in Danish history that will take place in a soccer stadium.

The fans can expect the impressive, full Elements of Life experience with state of the art special effects, unique laser sequences, fireworks, dancing water and an enormous HD screen that will showcase the four elements in all their glory.
